General Accountability

Reporting to the Director of Energy, the Petroleum Driver/Manager trainee promotes good customer relations by providing high calibre service to customers.  The incumbent is concerned with promoting and maintaining a positive image for the CO-OP Régionale.  Since this is a training position, which strives to provide experience in bulk fuel delivery, the incumbent must become familiar with government legislation covering the handling of various fuel products and apparatus, and must learn about the products being sold to assist in their selection, use and application. The Petroleum Truck Driver will assist in the operation and preventative maintenance of all bulk plant equipment as well as the safe operation of bulk fuel delivery truck.

The incumbent must also possess some knowledge of health and safety and of bulk plant operations, policies, and procedures usually acquired through the natural progression of job responsibilities. The Petroleum Manager Trainee must effectively and efficiently assist in supervising the department’s drivers, manage the company’s fleet of vehicles and offer direction to the team to drive the growth of revenue and productivity and promote high quality customer satisfaction.

Job Duties

AS A PETROLEUM DRIVER

  • Safely operate delivery truck to pick up and deliver various products obeying all rules of the road.
  • Communicate with central dispatch as well as customers and co-workers.
  • Perform daily pre-trip inspection, keep vehicle clean and ensure proper preventative maintenance and lubrication is carried out as required.
  • Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations or damage to the vehicles. 
  • Maintain logs of working hours and of vehicle service and repair status, following applicable provincial and federal regulations.  
  • Develop list of prospective and potential clients; make sales calls to attain or surpass customer fuel increase objectives.
  • Achieve and surpass petroleum, burner fuels objectives at minimum costs as measured by litres delivered/kilometers, cost/kilometers, and litres/delivery.
  • Provide automatic delivery of burner fuels based on degree days; provides delivery of other fuels as required and maintains appropriate levels. 
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures regarding the delivery of goods.
  • Record deliveries using computer; complete pricing and tax extensions, accept payments, ensure the proper completion of all paperwork, summarize daily sales, and complete all other reports required.
  • Provide feedback to supervision regarding customer problems, mechanical problems, or delivery problems.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork at the end of the shift. May include, but not limited to, daily logs, inspection logs, delivery receipts, vehicle inspection, hours of service, etc. 
  • Maintain current legislated or company required licenses, permits and certificates.
  • Report any convictions under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Be aware of steps and procedures required in case of accidents involving hazardous products and follow procedures as stipulated.
  • Always ensure proper stock on hand; report shortages, install and maintain customer equipment as required.
  • Ensure bulk plant operations are secured whenever unattended.
  • Adhere to Gasoline Handling Act regulations for loading and unloading of products and report all malfunctions of equipment promptly to the supervisor.
  • Promote CO-OP Régionale’s products, services, and philosophy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

AS A MANAGER TRAINEE

  • Ensure drivers and terminal personnel adhere to established statutory health regulation and safety standards. Be aware of steps and procedures required in case of accidents involving hazardous products and follow procedures as stipulated.
  • Must be safety conscious; train employees on the importance of safe work practices including proper use of equipment, cleaning guidelines and WHMIS procedures
  • Maintains good relations with farmers and customers.
  • Plan drivers' dispatch (schedule driver routes on a daily basis) assigning loads to drivers according to customer needs and driver capabilities; ensures that all loads are covered and on time; prevents unnecessary company charges or liabilities.
  • Verify fuel market price and make appropriate price changes considering margins established.
  • Estimate client fuel needs and suggest proper tank.
  • Solicit potential customers.
  • Complete price changes in software system.
  • Hold monthly staff safety meetings and ensure employees always work safe.
  • Provide day to day managerial direction and control of designated facility to insure the proficient operation of all terminal activities.
  • Manage quality assurance - setting quality standards, maintaining quality of all terminal activities.
  • Ensure accurate records of all products handled for quality billing, inventory, and grading.
  • Promote the CO-OP Régionale’s products, service, and philosophy.
  • Responsible for performance management
  • Responsible for appropriate staff levels to meet requirements of the terminal
  • Operate terminal efficiently by analyzing operating costs, equipment utilization, fuel mileage and driver wages.
  • Monitor Chelmsford Bulk Petroleum terminal performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made, and that corrective action is taken if necessary
  • Ensure compliance with company standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, and complete and on-time delivery.
  • Provide leadership for problem resolution to facilitate faster improvements and improved working relationships.
  • Enhance and develop policies, procedures, and service systems to meet the goals of the Chelmsford Bulk Petroleum terminal.
  • Monitor financial performance to ensure the terminal is meeting or exceeding budgetary commitment
  • Analyzes and report on the daily, monthly, and annually department's key performance indicators and industry trends.
  • Manage the morale in the department by setting and demonstrating a strong business ethic for dealing with employees, suppliers, and customers.
  • Review and use the monthly Profit and Loss statements to ensure expense control and proactively plan service and sales goals.Achieve and surpass petroleum, burner fuels objectives.
  • Conduct fleet management review on company vehicles and stationary equipment as necessary.
  • Ensure that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Schedule driver routes on a daily basis.
  • Register all tanks delivered on reserve or federal land with government and update records accordingly.
  • Verify that customer accounts are up to date.
  • Ensure accurate records of all products handled for quality billing, inventory, and grading.
  • Responsible for appropriate staff levels to meet requirements of the terminal
  • Operate terminal efficiently by analyzing operating costs, equipment utilization, fuel mileage and driver wages.
  • Make deliveries of new tanks to clients and pick up of old ones.
  • Complete appropriate documents and provide instructions to clients (Reg. 217).
  • Update tank information in spreadsheet.
  • Verify customers are ordering the proper product for the tank supplied.
  • Charge customers for their tank rental if they are under required volume.
  • Ensure tanks are installed as per TSSA standards.
  • Perform maintenance on tanks and supplies for clients and at gas bars.
  • Deal with customer problems and complaints.
  • Oversee incident resolution and insurance claims.
  • Monitor gas bar and bulk plant fuel levels to always ensure proper stock on hand; resolve shortages, install, and maintain customer equipment as required.
  • Pick up transport load and log information.
  • Verify driver log information.
  • Take readings from tanks at bulk plant.
  • Control tank inventory and place product orders for installations.
  • Complete tank rental documents and obtain necessary signatures.
  • Monitor Diesel X Gold levels.
  • Perform some accounts receivable duties.
  • Communicate with central dispatch as well as customers and co-workers.

  • Review expiry dates of company required licenses, permits, and certificates.
  • Record drivers’ convictions under the Highway Traffic Act.

  • Oversee the maintenance of the company’s fleet of vehicles Performs or delegate’s regular maintenance on equipment as directed.
  • Maintains truck associated equipment in a safe, clean, and workable condition.
  • Report any convictions under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Wear appropriate (PPE) personal protection equipment when performing different
  • Place orders for personal protective equipment and encourage employees to use it at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • One years’ experience in Logistics, Transportation or Business management experience or strong knowledge of dispatch, transportation management and logistics solutions with proven leadership abilities.
  • Bulk Fuel petroleum background or a thorough knowledge of fuel sales would be an asset.
  • Valid DZ License, defensive driving, and certificate for driving a forklift would be an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of inventory control techniques and procedures would be an asset
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Bilingual in French and English would be an asset.
  • Demonstrate some leadership skills, with a focus on operations and business processes.
